Moving into a new home can be exciting, but unpacking immediately may make important areas harder to clean. Empty rooms provide clear access to floors, cupboards, corners, and fitted storage.
Completing a practical clean before bringing in furniture and belongings gives you a fresher starting point. It may also reveal damage or maintenance problems that were previously hidden.
Begin With Empty Rooms
Vacuum carpets and hard floors before boxes and furniture are placed inside. Mop suitable flooring and allow it to dry fully.
Wipe skirting boards, window ledges, radiators, door frames, wardrobe interiors, and the tops of fitted units. These areas are easier to reach while the rooms are empty.
Check corners for cobwebs, dust, signs of damp, or evidence of pests. Photograph any concerns before changing the condition of a rented property.
Clean Inside the Kitchen
Kitchen cupboards and drawers should be cleaned before food, plates, and cookware are stored inside. Remove crumbs, dust, sticky marks, and any items left by previous occupants.
Wipe worktops, sinks, taps, handles, splashbacks, and appliance surfaces. If the property includes a refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, or washing machine, inspect it carefully.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and do not mix cleaning products, particularly inside ovens or other enclosed areas.
Give Bathrooms Extra Attention
Clean toilets, baths, showers, sinks, taps, mirrors, floors, and storage areas. Look for soap residue, limescale, mould, damaged sealant, leaks, or slow drainage.
Wash bathroom cabinets before adding toiletries. Replace or clean removable items such as toilet seats, shower curtains, and extractor covers when necessary.
Ventilate the room and allow wet surfaces to dry. Report serious mold, leaks, or damaged fittings to the landlord or appropriate professional rather than covering the problem.
Wipe High-Touch Areas
Door handles, switches, cupboard pulls, window handles, keys, bannisters, thermostats, and entry controls may have been handled by previous occupants, contractors, agents, or viewers.
Wipe these surfaces using products suitable for their materials. Avoid applying excess liquid around electrical controls.
Also check remote controls, alarm keypads, appliance buttons, and any shared building access devices included with the property.
Inspect Hidden Spaces
Look behind appliances, inside utility cupboards, beneath sinks, and around fitted units. Check for leaks, dust, pests, disconnected pipes, or belongings left behind.
Clean inside wardrobes, airing cupboards, and storage spaces before placing clothing or linen inside. Also check vents and extractor fans for heavy dust.
Prioritise kitchens, bathrooms, floors, storage areas, and frequently touched surfaces before unpacking decorative items.
You do not need to make every room perfect immediately. Focus first on the areas that will hold food, cookware, toiletries, clothing, and bedding.
Cleaning before unpacking helps keep your belongings away from old dirt and makes the moving process more organised. Once the essential spaces are ready, you can place items directly into clean cupboards and rooms without moving everything again later.
